Celeb Twitter Round-Up: David Mashabela, 50, Welcomes First Child
Many folks put their goals to have a family on hold in order to focus on their careers, which is completely valid. Television personality David Mashabela is one of them – in fact, he’s just become a daddy for the first time at the age of 50!
Most recently, Mashabela sat down for an interview with Mbuyiseni Ndlozi on Power FM’s “PowerTalk” show. He confirmed that he had welcomed his first child two months ago.
When asked why it took him so long to embrace fatherhood, Mashabela candidly replied that he instead “chose to make sure that I’m not poor”; ie. he wanted to be in a place of financial stability first. What’s more, he was afraid that having a child in his younger years would have slowed him down career-wise.
“It wasn’t complicated for me,” he said. “It was a matter of I have one rand; I wish to have 100 rands. For me to have a hundred rands, I have to sacrifice a few things. And one of those things was zero social life, which affects everything else that comes with it, including relationships.”
Over on Twitter/X, a lotta folks shared their happiness for Mashabela and his new bundle of joy:
By the same token, it also led to a couple of questions and slightly ageist remarks like these ones:
This led to some back-and-forth with other folks, who had some thought-provoking responses regarding finances and the unpredictability of life expectancy:
All in all, while folks will agree or disagree with Mashabela for fathering a child in his middle age, we should still be delighted that he’s reached this personal milestone.
Congratulations to him on the new addition to the Mashabela family!
