Celeb Twitter Round-Up: DJ Poizen’s Tombstone Sets Tongues Wagging
Earlier this month, photos of late actress Nandi Nyembe’s extravagant tombstone were circulated online. It caused consternation among Twitter/X users, who felt that the money spent on the tombstone could have been used to improve her financial situation while she was still alive.
Now, similar sentiments have arisen following the unveiling of DJ Poizen’s tombstone.
On 30 August, the deep house musician – real name Caven Masetla-Moshoane – died at the age of 35 after he was involved in a fatal car crash on the N1 near Polokwane, Limpopo.
On Saturday, 13 September, Poizen’s funeral took place at his home village of Tickyline, which is located outside Lenyenye, Tzaneen. He was then laid to rest at Ga-Malesa Cemetery.
Although the “You Can Win” hitmaker did have life insurance policies and funeral cover in place, his family received additional financial contributions from the public. This included an elaborate tombstone donated by Thabaletsi Tombstones, which cost around R100 000.
This is what the tombstone looks like:
The tombstone features a likeness of Poizen positioned beneath a headphone-topped, speaker-like headstone bearing the following: his stage name; his real name; the dates of his birth, death and burial; and a tribute message.
The ledger panel is fashioned like a mixer, with Thabaletsi Tombstones’ contact details engraved on the front.
As you can imagine, most tweeps were in disbelief:
Several thought that this tombstone is simply too much:
Although this tombstone was sponsored, folks wondered if some of the monetary donations made to Poizen’s family went towards its creation, or at least its erection:
For tweeps like @TalentNyonie, it again reignited discussions about putting such donations to better use, especially in the context of how South African entertainers who live in impoverished conditions are ignored until they pass away:
Meanwhile, other Twitter/X users had a humorous take on the whole situation:
The tombstone might not appeal to everyone, but – minus the product placement – it’s certainly a meaningful tribute for a man whose whole life revolved around music. We’re pretty sure that Poizen’s spirit is pretty chuffed.
Although we will be a little freaked out if DOES start playing music at night!
