Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Doja Cat Calls Out Her “Deadbeat” Dad

The relationship between American songstress Doja Cat and her father, veteran South African actor/dancer Dumisani Dlamini, is a little bit … hard to follow at times.

On one hand, Dlamini is said to have lived with Doja Cat’s mother – a Jewish-American painter named Deborah Sawyer – for 15 years in the United States of America, before returning to South Africa without his family. He maintains that he’s still close to his kids, especially the “Say So” singer (real name Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini).

On the other hand, Doja Cat claims that she’s never even met the man and that he’s been absent from her life for a long time (save for the comments he leaves on her timelines). Despite this, she still has some love and admiration for Dlamini, if her previous comments about his immense talents are anything to go by.

So yes, lots of ups and plenty of downs, though it’s difficult to decide what’s true or false.

Clearly, though, Doja Cat seemed to think on Monday, 27 May, that being a loving, supportive and present dad wasn’t part of Dlamini’s repertoire.

However, she seemed to reverse her stance by editing the post:

Over on Twitter/X, some folks from Mzansi were rooting for Doja Cat and egged her on:

Others reckoned that the 28-year-old “Like That” hitmaker is either just looking for attention or that she’s a troubled soul in need of saving (with a few tweeps also defending her dad):

For real, though, it’s a sucky situation for any child who has a strained – or non-existent – relationship with one or both of their parents. Maybe Doja Cat was wrong to air her grievances with her dad on social media, or perhaps Dumisani Dlamini is in the wrong for not being there for his daughter when she needed him the most.

Either way, it’s clear that there are a lot of hurt and unresolved issues between them that need to be addressed and hopefully fixed – preferably behind closed doors!
