Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Nandi Nyembe’s Tombstone Sparks Angry Responses

September 01, 2025

It’s been nine days since veteran actress Nandi Nyembe passed away, and the general mood among Twitter/X users is a combination of sadness and anger, particularly when pics of her tombstone began to circulate online.

On 23 August, the “Yizo Yizo” star passed away at the age of 75. Her funeral took place on Saturday, 30 August, at the Walter Sisulu Hall in Johannesburg’s Randburg suburb; she was then laid to rest at the nearby Westpark Cemetery.

At the time of her death, Nyembe had been dealing with poor health amid personal financial struggles that left her impoverished. Her unfortunate circumstances and subsequent passing has since reignited conversations about how South African artists, thespians and entertainers are often left destitute due to factors such as lack of government funding, receiving little to no royalties and poor financial management.

Such conversations have taken an indignant, almost disappointed turn in tone after pics of Nyembe’s tombstone were online:

While many would regard this as a beautiful tribute to a star of Mam’ Nandi Nyembe’s calibre, a lot of tweeps say that the money that went into it – as well as her funeral arrangements – could have been better spent on improving Nyembe’s financial situation, or at least make the last few days of her life more comfortable:

Again, it’s a stark reminder that we ought to show love and appreciate our faves while they’re still alive, and the same message goes for our loved ones. We have no idea how long we all have left in this topsy-turvy world, so we need to make time to share some TLC with each other and carry out kind gestures wherever possible.

This is the message we have learned from Nyembe’s death. Here’s hoping it will reach the ears of the masses and spark a change for the better.
