Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Netizens Cancel Minister Over Racist Remarks

August 11, 2025

It’s true what they say about comments on the internet: even if you remove them, the internet will remember them FOREVER. In this instance, social media users are calling for the head of Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, after several of his old posts on Twitter/X surfaced.

The tweets – which date back to 2013, and were either tone-deaf or discriminatory – started doing the rounds on Friday, 8 August.

The following day, Women’s Day, found him in even hotter water, with several crass tweets brought up.

Tweeps, and political parties, reacted as you would imagine, but most howled for Minister McKenzie to be given his marching orders. Radio personality Sizwe Dhlomo lead the charge:

Some stood on the sidelines, nodding their heads at the burning mess.

Others tried to wrap their brains around how he became an Honourable Member of Parliament while bringing up his criminal past with the numbers gangs.

Then you had those users who rolled their eyes and doubted he would be shown the door, as politicians in Mzansi rarely see their just desserts:

After the weekend, Minister McKenzie came out swinging with equal amounts of denial and accountability, but not really fooling anyone.

Many would agree that a harsh dose of medicine is in order. In the end, it sounds like several hard decisions need to be made by those in charge. One small silver lining is how the majority of South Africans united in their condemnation of the racist utterances.

Watch this space to see if Gayton McKenzie stays, or gets thrown out of Parliament on his rear!
