Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Samthing Soweto-DJ Maphorisa Beef Continues

September 11, 2024

Remember the drama that went down between Samthing Soweto and DJ Maphorisa last week? Remember how we predicted that it was far from over?

Well, guess what, folks – it’s DEFINITELY not over!

Just as a refresher: Samthing Soweto was left off the credits of “Amalanga Awafani”, an amapiano song produced by Mas Musiq and Lawd Weezy. DJ Maphorisa and TO Starquality, who both landed features on the tune, were credited.

This led to the 36-year-old vocalist’s fans accusing Maphorisa of using his power and influence to leave his name off the credits (which has since been added on streaming platforms, BTW).

In response, the record producer called out Samthing Soweto for being “greedy” and “wanting to own all the masters of the songs.” He also strongly implied that without his aid – namely, contributing production to his earlier albums – the “Amagents” singer wouldn’t be as successful as he is today.

On Tuesday, 10 September, Samthing Soweto retaliated with a series of tweets, and they were full of spice AND salt:

Essentially, Samthing Soweto is saying that the producer has never contributed to any of his music, specifically his previous album “Isiphithiphiti” (Kabza de Small and Mas Musiq were the ones responsible for producing “40% to 60% of my work”).

What’s more, he deliberately used Maphorisa’s name to boost his sales – and, judging by the statement that he paid him “an amount that he asked for” for the album’s masters, Maphorisa clearly went along with the act.

Samthing Soweto is also bemoaning the fact that major figures in the industry tend to take advantage of artists like him, whether it’s reducing their names to mere features on songs or using their music without their permission, which makes them miss out on revenue streams.

As for the drama surrounding “Amalanga Awafani”, Samthing Soweto tweeted:

It’s a headache-inducing situation, one that’s drawing incredibly varied responses towards both musos:

It also drew another response from Maphorisa himself:

“Samthing Soweto, please don’t make us kids,” he’s heard saying in the clip. “I asked you on the phone two-to-three years ago to send me an invoice. Let’s also pay you the way you paid us with “Isiphithiphiti” so we can pay you and be square. Why do you want to win everything? Why do you want to own all the masters? Does it make sense? Do we work for you?

“Don’t act like you’re the victim in this situation. If we own the masters and give you your money, you’re going to lose. I’m tired of this back and forth. You didn’t want the song to be out because you wanted to sabotage us; now you’re hot and people know your character, so you want to explain yourself.”

Again, tweeps’ opinions were a mixed bag:

The video made Samthing Soweto sit up and take notice, and he immediately retweeted it with some semblance of victory:

As you can imagine, the peeps were practically gulping down on this tea (with a side order of popcorn):

There you have it, folks. It’s a lot to take in, but the gist is that the beef between Samthing Soweto and DJ Maphorisa is still cooking. Here’s hoping they can hash it out before someone gets burned!
