Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Shauwn Mkhize Gets Roasted Over Royal AM Debacle
Businesswoman and socialite Shauwn Mkhize is catching all the strays on social media after her football club, Royal AM, was recently kicked out of the Nedbank Cup by the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Last November, it emerged that Mkhize – who owns the Pietermaritzburg-based outfit and serves as its president – owed the South African Revenue Service (SARS) approximately R40 million in tax debt.
This had a significant effect on Royal AM’s operations, leading to the non-payment of player salaries and a FIFA-imposed ban on signing new players. As a result, they were compelled to postpone numerous matches in the PSL.
In addition to being removed from the Nedbank Cup, Thwihli Thwahla has reportedly been put up for sale by SARS:
Over on Twitter/X, many folks wondered how Mam’Mkhize managed to end up in this mess despite all the supposed millions of moolah sitting in her bank accounts:
Some tweeps came up with their own theories:
Meanwhile, many tweeps homed in on the fact that a lot of media publications used none-too-flattering pics of the 49-year-old club president to break the news, prompting them to joke that SARS was responsible for taking away her make-up and filters:
Yup, just Mzansi-branded subtlety at its best!
Hilarity aside for a second, others are worried about the future of Royal AM, especially when it comes to the employment of players, technical team and other club workers:
If reports of Royal AM being on sale are true, we can only hope it will soon be purchased by a buyer who will turn Thwihli Thwahla’s fortunes around for the better. Until then, it’s a matter of waiting patiently for any glimmer of good news.
