Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Simphiwe Dana Rails Against Nomzamo Mbatha Over Hair

July 28, 2025

Last week, podcaster Wendy Mbatha caught heat for her interviewing style. Now, her sister Nomzamo Mbatha is the one who’s been hit with criticism … over her hairstyle!

Earlier today (Monday, 28 July), singer-songwriter Simphiwe Dana – known for her Afro-centric style – publicly accused the 35-year-old actress of copying her hairstyle without acknowledging her influence.

In a now-deleted tweet, the “Ndiredi” hitmaker posted a black-and-white pic of herself. In the caption, she lashed out at both Mbatha and the popular historical drama series, “Shaka iLembe”, in which Mbatha stars as Queen Nandi (who also wears extravagant hairstyles on screen, as befitting the isiZulu royal’s noble status):

Dana also hopped onto Instagram, where she shared a now-deleted post featuring a photo of Mbatha rocking a similar hairstyle, most likely worn during a promotional appearance for the series:

Clearly, Dana didn’t garner the support she wanted. Instead, folks on Twitter/X accused her of playing the victim, seeking attention and trying to stay relevant:

Others also pointed out that the 45-year-old songstress’ iconic hairstyles are not unique to her nor were they invented by her, and that she has a whole culture to thank for her aesthetic:

Mbatha hasn’t responded to Dana’s accusations. The “Shaka iLembe” team has also yet to make a comment.

If anything, Wendy Mbatha has a juicy opportunity on her hands if she could invite her sister and Dana to hash it out on her podcast!
