Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Tyla Bags Major Award at 2025 MTV VMAs

September 08, 2025

She came, she slayed, she conquered! Tyla is once again doing South Africa proud after winning a major award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Sunday, 7 September.

The 23-year-old songstress beat out the likes of Burna Boy, Rema, Tems and Wizkid to win the award in the “Best Afrobeats” category for her chart-topping single, “Push 2 Start.”

This marks the second consecutive time Tyla has won a Moonman in this particular category; last year, she took home this award for her worldwide viral hit, “Water”.

A lot of peeps took to the streets of Twitter/X to celebrate their fave’s achievement:

However, many were scratching their heads about Tyla’s inclusion in this VMAs category, especially since “Push 2 Start” is considered an Amapiano track, and that the young artist herself specialises in Amapiano-style music:

For some naysayers, Tyla’s win proved that the VMAs purposely snubbed the other artists nominated in the category in order to rig the award in her favour. A few folks reckoned that Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Ayra Starr – whose song, “Last Heartbreak Song”, was only nominated in the “MTV Push Performance of the Year” category – should have received the accolade:

Whether you love her or hate her, you can’t deny that Tyla has worldwide appeal. Any win she picks up is a huge win for Mzansi, so natuurlik, we can only keep pushing for her continued success in the global music scene!
