Behind the Stage Names of 6 South African Musicians

South Africa’s musicians are known across the country and beyond by names that roll easily off the tongue, yet the identities printed on their birth certificates tell a richer story of heritage, family and country.

Let’s take a look at the real-life names of Mzansi’s most famous musical artists:

1. DJ Black Coffee

Since the early 2000s, Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo – AKA DJ Black Coffee – has taken South African house music from Durban townships to Ibiza’s biggest clubs and the Grammy Awards stage.

His stage name is based on the nickname that his grandmother gave him on account of his dark complexion.

2. Cassper Nyovest

Refiloe Maele Phoolo sounds like your  average guy next door in Mafikeng, North West – under the nom de plume “Cassper Nyovest”, he is popularly known as one of the most commercially successful rappers in SA.

According to Nyovest, he borrowed “Cassper” from the cartoon character, Casper the Friendly Ghost; as for the last name, it’s something he made up as a youngster.

3. Makhadzi

Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona hails from Ha-Mashamba, a Venda village in Limpopo. Adopting the Tshivenda word for “aunt” as her stage name, Makhadzi began making waves in 2017, singing largely in Tshivenda and Xitsonga, proving that mother-tongue music travels.

Since then, Makhadzi has become one of the most recognisable Afro-pop acts in the country.

4. Master KG

The year of 2020, when the world first experienced the coronavirus pandemic, was a dark time. Fortunately, “Jerusalema” by musician and record producer Master KG shone a light, uniting folks around the world in song and dance.

As you can tell, the Limpopo-born muso – real name Kgaogelo Moagi – takes his moniker from the first two letters of his first name.

5. Nasty C

Nsikayesizwe David Junior Ngcobo of Soweto, Johannesburg, began rapping at nine years old after relocating to Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. He’d rap the songs of TI and Lil Wayne – swear words and all – earning him the nickname “Nasty Cat”, or “Nasty C” for short.

Now, Nasty C is among the most prolific hip-hop artists on the continent, with a discography that has earned him love in Mzansi and the rest of the world.

6. Tyla

Tyla Laura Seethal is the rare case where the stage name is simply the first name. Born and raised in Johannesburg, Gauteng, she made waves with her 2023 Amapiano single, “Water”.

Now, Tyla’s name has become synonymous with South African pop music on the global stage!
