Lionel Newton, 61, Passes Away

Actor Lionel Newton has passed away at the age of 61.

On Wednesday, 12 August, media company Acting Spaces released a statement on Instagram, in which they announced Newton’s death.

“A performer of immense depth, discipline and presence, Lionel brought truth and humanity to every character he inhabited,” the statement reads. “His contribution to South African storytelling will continue to inspire generations of actors and creatives.

“We honour his artistry, his legacy and the countless lives he touched through his work. Rest in peace, Lionel Newton.”

Details regarding the cause of death have yet to be disclosed.

Born in Alberton, Gauteng, in 1965, Newton starred in a multitude of theatre productions, television shows and films. His credits include Boy Kills World, Triomf and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Notably, he starred as director John Daragon in Leon Schuster’s 2005 hit comedy flick, Mama Jack.

Many Instagram users – including actors who worked alongside Newton – took to the comments section to express their shock over his passing and pay tribute.

“Words fail me,” wrote actress Xolile Tshabalala. “A phatheon [sic] of our industry, a brilliant actor I had a privilege to share the stage with, a generous thespian whose work will be marked in history books as phenomenal. Rest in peace, Sir Newton, may your soul receive a standing ovation.”
