South African Icon Sebogodi Dies
South Africa is mourning the loss of one of its most celebrated veterans of stage and screen, Seputla Sebogodi, who passed away on Wednesday evening, 15 July 2026, at the age of 63. His family confirmed the tragic news in a formal statement on Thursday, revealing that the legendary actor succumbed to health complications related to diabetes.
“The immediate family of Seputla Sebogodi confirms, with profound sadness, his passing on the evening of 15 July 2026 following complications related to diabetes,” the family shared, adding that “his legacy will live on through his remarkable body of work and the many lives he touched.”
Sebogodi built a legendary five-decade career, becoming a household face across millions of South African homes through his unforgettable, commanding portrayal of the villainous tycoon Kenneth Mashaba on the SABC soap opera Generations. His immense versatility also shone brightly across other major television roles in Suburban Bliss, Bophelo ke Semphego, and Scandal!, alongside critically acclaimed theatrical work such as The Rivonia Trial and Waiting for Godot. Notably, his passing comes just days after his final theatre production, Black Moon, debuted at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.
Tributes flooded in from across the artistic community. Close friend and industry colleague Tebogo Sithathu expressed absolute heartbreak: “What a talent, what a loss for the country and the industry.” Fellow actor Mangaliso Ngema also praised his unwavering artistry, noting that Sebogodi “is a guy that should have been used to develop the arts, especially theatre.”
